Position Title: Lead Horticulturist

Lead Horticulturist provides leadership support and training to Horticulturists and Grounds Staff in the routine maintenance of interior and exterior ornamental plantings and ensures appropriate and safe application of pesticides and fertilizers, when needed.
Assists the Grounds Supervisor in working with various operational areas to design dynamic seasonal flower beds and landscaping for interior and exterior resort areas.

Requires an Associate’s degree in Horticulture, Landscape Design, Ecology or related field.
2 years experience in commercial landscape design or maintenance is preferred.

WORK SCHEDULE: 5 days per week – 8 hour days, including weekends Variable Hours
OVERVIEW OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the direction of the Park Manager, the Park Worker 3 performs semi-skilled and unskilled park maintenance tasks. The tasks will include general carpentry, plumbing and masonry. They will also include operating, maintaining and repairing a variety of power driven equipment such as, trucks, tractors, mowers and small engines. The incumbent will perform ground and trail maintenance and cleaning activities. He/she may also assign, review, train and evaluate the work of other employees. Under the direction of the supervisor, the Park Worker may be required to perform a variety of golf course maintenance tasks, including but not limited to, mowing greens, tees, fairways, and roughs, raking sand traps, aerating and other related golf course activities. In the absence of the Park Manager, the Park Worker 3 may supervise the operation of the park.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Two years experience in the operation and/or maintenance of a park, historic site, or recreational facility; OR two years experience as a trades assistant under the supervision of a skilled tradesperson, or completion of an appropriate two-year technical/trades school course.
OPERATING NEEDS:
*Must possess and maintain a valid NYS driver’s license. *Must possess a NYS Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B or obtain one within the probationary period at his/her own expense.
*Under the provisions of the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act (1991), this position has been designated Safety Sensitive. The incumbent is required to participate in pre-employment and random post-employment drug and alcohol testing.
* Must possess and maintain Certified Pesticide Applicator’s License for Tuft and Ornamental or obtain one during the probationary period.
